Why Train In EMDR?
EMDR has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition, EMDR has been successfully used to treat more everyday symptoms of phobias and anxiety disorders, whether these relate to the past, present or future. More clients are becoming aware of this treatment and are seeking trained practitioners to help them. EMDR can be delivered effectively in person or online, and adding this skill to your toolkit will enable you to broaden your offer in therapy.
A Highly Effective Technique
EMDR is particularly noted for its effectiveness in reducing the vividness and emotional impact of traumatic memories. Follow-up studies indicate that the benefits of EMDR are maintained over time. Clients often continue to experience symptom relief for months or even years after treatment.
EMDR has also been used to treat other conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, and phobias. However, the majority of research and strongest evidence supports its use for PTSD.
National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE):
NICE guidelines recommend EMDR for adults with PTSD, particularly for those who have experienced trauma that occurred more than three months ago.
A Gentler Way of Processing and Treating Trauma
Trauma comes in all shapes and sizes. EMDR is a highly versatile and applicable technique that calmly assists with processing traumatic events. EMDR does not use forceful methods or ask the client to talk through the traumatic events in detail. Instead, the therapist asks the client to bring the painful memories to the surface and then proceeds with the EMDR technique of following eye movements (or other types of bilateral stimulation). Clients often do not have to relive painful memories for long periods, which can only cause more harm and triggering episodes. Instead, the painful memories are only relived in small, manageable chunks, enabling clients to re-frame and gain new insights into events from the past.
